Regional matchups feature top teams

Woodward, Okla. — As the basketball playoffs reach the regional stage for the state's smaller school, some high-quality matchups are already on tap in Area 1.

That's especially true in Class A where several of the boys games are ones you might normally see in an area tournament, but they are taking place in the regional semifinals due to the overall quality of the field.

For instance, Beaver at Laverne and Mooreland at Seiling are big matchups for what in essence is the second round of the playoffs in the area.

Here's a look at how the Class B and A groupings for this area shake out so far.

Class A Boys

The regional semifinals Thursday should provide plenty of excitement.

Laverne defeated Beaver 83-75 earlier this season and the Tigers showed they were playoff ready with a 70-68 win over Forgan in the final regular season matchup.

Trevor Harris and Mason Overstreet headline an athletic group that was in the state tournament last year. The veteran combo of Garrett Weber and Jorge Rivera make Beaver a dangerous opponent against anyone.

Mooreland will try to duplicate its regular season victory at Seiling and the young Bearcats - one senior starter - are plenty capable.

Seiling counters with the high scoring duo of Bowan Nyberg and Britt Shuck.

The elimination games on Thursday are interesting as well. Vici will try and go 3-0 against Texhoma this year when they square off in Laverne. The Indians won 41-40 and 45-41 in the regular season.

At Seiling, the Cherokee Chiefs and Ringwood are athletic teams trapped in a tremendously difficult class.

In the southern regional, Fort Cobb-Broxton and Cheyenne are big favorites to advance on the winners side. Fort Cobb-Broxton is ranked No. 1 in the state most of its wins have been lopsided - only 2 games decided by 10 or fewer points. Cheyenne has a 7-game winning streak going.

Class A Girls

Vici and Texhoma split games during the regular season and the rubber match will determine who plays in the regional final on Saturday. The Indians are ranked 13th and Texhoma 18th.

At Seiling, the host Lady Wildcats take an 18-5 record into a contest with Fargo-Gage, which knocked off Mooreland and Cherokee to win the district. Fargo-Gage is 13-13 and won 4 of its last 6 games.

The elimination game in Laverne has the host Tigers against Boise City and in Seiling, it will be Cherokee taking on Arapaho. Both teams have turned in up and down seasons.

The southern regional is topped by No. 1-ranked Cheyenne. The Lady Bears are 22-3 with 2 of those losses coming in the prestigious Bertha Teague Mid America Classic over the holidays. Fort Cobb-Broxton and Hydro-Eakly are both ranked in the top 15.

Class B Boys

Everyone is kind of anticipating a Forgan-Okeene matchup in the area next week, but both have some work to do first.

Forgan opens the regional against a Waynoka team it beat 63-21 early in the season. The Bulldogs are 23-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state. Waynoka got a nice win in Shattuck last week to capture the District. The Rails are young and have improved throughout the season.

That game is in Shattuck.

The matchup in Buffalo has Balko taking on 20th-ranked Burlington, a state tournament team last year. Balko barely held off Buffalo 64-60 at home in the district last week.

In elimination games, Buffalo faces DCLA and Tyrone takes on Shattuck. Tyrone was in the area finals last year.

The winners brace games in the southern regional have Okeene traveling to Leedey and Felt playing Dover in Boomer Fieldhouse.

Okeene is 20-3, ranked 5th and has a 12-game winning streak. All of its losses have been to ranked teams. Leedey is ranked 19th and has won 7 of its last 8 games.

Felt and Dover are 2 of the higher scoring teams in the tournament. In building a 20-2 record, Felt has scored 80 or more points 11 gamers. Dover is ranked 16th had has won 6 in a row.

In elimination games, Goodwell takes on Covington-Douglas and Aline-Cleo faces Fort Supply.

Class B girls

Shattuck may still be under-rated at 6th in Class B as the Lady Indians have won 18 games in a row. At the same time, they face a potentially capable opponent in Forgan. Shattuck is 4-0 against the Lady Bulldogs this year, but a couple were close, including an overtime game in the Buffalo Tournament. Forgan, 11-13, has won 4 straight.

Balko sports an 18-5 record and No. 12 ranking, but barely got past Buffalo in the district. Burlington is 22-4 and ranked 7th with wins in 11 of its last 12 games. One of those victories was against Timberlake.

On the elimination side, Buffalo takes on Medford and Tyrone faces Waynoka.

At Leedey, it will be the host Lady Bison against Okeene, which upset Sharon-Mutual in the district. Leedey is ranked 20th despite an 11-13 record, but the Lady Bison have played a brutal schedule this year. Okeene is 13-11.

At Boomer Fieldhouse, Lomega brings a 20-4 record and No. 3 ranking to take on a Felt club that is 16-6.

The elimination games feature Goodwell vs. Covington-Douglas and Fort Supply vs. Sharon-Mutual.
