Laverne wins second consecutive state championship

Woodward, Okla. — Laverne cemented its position as the top Class B football team in Oklahoma with a second consecutive state championship on Saturday.

The Tigers beat Pond Creek-Hunter 42-12 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University for their second title and 28th straight victory.

It was Laverne’s fourth win over their district rivals in the past two years, including both state title contests.

Trevor Harris rushed for 297 yards and four touchdowns - on runs of 77, 70, 51 and 4 yards - to highlight an offense that piled up 450 yards on the ground.

Tucker Rolf and Dalton Birch also had touchdowns for Laverne on runs of 4 and 50 yards, respectively.

The Tigers took a 14-0 lead on Harris’ 77 and 70 yard runs, but the Panthers trimmed the lead to 14-6 at halftime.

Overcoming an early turnover in the second half, the Tigers built their lead up to 28-6 before the Panthers scored to make it 28-12.

Two fourth quarter touchdowns by the Tigers eliminated any Panther visions of a late rally.

Laverne’s defense forced 3 turnovers and made several other key stops on Panther drives.
