Boomers win softball district

Johnny McMahan

Woodward bounced back from a first-game loss to beat Guymon twice and win the Class 4A District 1 championship Thursday night on the WHS field.

Guymon jumped on the Boomers in game one with a 10-5 victory, but Woodward evened the score at 1-1 with a 7-3 victory in game two.

The third game was all Woodward.

Six straight hits, capped by a three-run homer from Isabella Martin, gave the Boomers a 6-0 lead in the first inning and they put it away with 8 in the fourth on the way to a 14-2 victory in the championship game.

Jenna Trissel started the first inning rally with a hit, then scored on Whitley Williamson’s double. Kayli Castor bunted for a single, then Danielle Ramirez singled and Mikala Wynn doubled. Martin then blasted a three-run homer.

In the third inning, the Boomers turned the game into a blowout.

Wynn reached on an error, then Martin and Taitum Hoffman walked to load the bases.

Two runs scored on Chelsea Bilbo’s grounder, then Haylee Bates and Trissel singled, Williamson and Castor walked and Ramirez and Martin doubled for the 14-0 lead.

Guymon didn’t score until the fifth inning when it picked up a couple of consolation runs to avoid the shutout.

Williamson was the winning pitcher.

In the first game, Guymon had 12 hits and took advantage of several Boomer errors to win easily.

The Tigers led 10-1 going into the bottom of the seventh when the Boomers showed signs of life with four runs before the game ended on a hard line drive.

Williamson took the loss with Courtney Cook throwing in relief.

In the second game, the Boomers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a double by Ramirez single by Hoffman and a double steal.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the third as Castor tripled and scored on a bunt by Ramirez. Martin had an RBI singe later in the inning.

Guymon scored twice in the fifth, but the Boomers added three in the sixth with Hoffman hitting a key single. The Boomers took advantage of three Guymon errors in the inning.

Guyon got one back in the bottom of the sixth but couldn’t get closer.

Williamson started and finished the game. Wynn pitched the sixth inning and faced two batters in the seventh.

A big key for the Boomers came on defense as they committed just two errors in the final two games.

Woodward, 11-20, will play in the regional tournament next week at a site to be announced.

The district title was the second in three years for the Boomers, who erased the sting of a loss to Guymon in last year’s playoffs.

In area action on Thursday, Mooreland advanced to the regional with a pair of wins over Seiling.

The Bearcats won the first game 21-0 and the second 11-5. Mooreland is 23-5-1 on the season.

At Fairview, the host Yellowjackets and Chisholm split. Chisholm won the first game 6-0 and Fairview took the second 4-2.

The teams will play the championship game today at 11 a.m.

In baseball, Arnett moved within a game of the regional tournament with wins over Vici and Fort Supply. Arnett and Vici play today at 4 p.m. with Arnett needing just one win to advance.
