Travelers go 2-3 in opening tournament

MIDWEST CITY - After scoring just six runs in two losses on Saturday, the Woodward Travelers got their bats going Sunday in the Midwest City Memorial Day Tournament at Rose State College.
The Travelers pounded out 16 hits to beat Edmond Santa Fe 17-9, then battered the Spivey Stars 12-4 in five innings.
Woodward played Putnam North on Monday and lost 9-1. Dylan Weber had a homer for the Travelers only run.
Against Edmond Santa Fe, the Travelers produced throughout the lineup with seven of the nine batters getting at least one hit. Levi Lewis was the winning pitcher with relief help from Trevor Long in the middle innings. Steve Nelson worked the last frame. The Travelers jumped out to a 7-0 lead but Edmond Santa Fe closed to 9-8 after five innings.
A four-run sixth reestablished the Traveler lead. In that frame. The Travelers added four more in the seventh.
Ryne Dunlavy drove in three runs and Weber had three hits, including a homer, to pace the Travelers. Leadoff hitter Justin Oakes had three hits and drove in two runs.
In the second game, Tyler Overton overcame a rough start to pitch all five innings. Overton walked or hit the first four batters he faced, but got out of trouble thanks to a key double play by Long.
Spivey scored three times in the third to take a brief 4-3 lead, but Overton controlled the Stars in the final two innings while Woodward was scoring eight runs.
Chance Beck drove in five runs for Woodward and Brittin Parsons hit a two-run homer.
Woodward, 2-3, goes to Elk City on Wednesday.
