Boomers end year

Woodward News

CHICKASHA – Woodward’s bid for a trip to the Class 4A state basketball tournament ended here Saturday night.

Anadarko eliminated the Boomers 60-57 in the area consolation final to claim the second state berth from Area I. McGuinness defeated Woodward 45-40 in the area championship game on Friday.

The Boomers were hoping to bounce back and claim their second trip to state in Corey Miller’s six years as head coach. They had beaten Anadarko by a point in the regional final last week.

A furious last-minute rally by the Boomers fell just short.

Anadarko led 58-46 with under two minutes left, but the Boomers stormed back.

Two buckets by Andrew Hickman made it 58-50 with 28 seconds left. Matt Moore stole the inbounds pass and scored, cutting the lead to 58-52 with 25 seconds remaining.

After a missed free throw, then a turnover by the Warriors, Kurt Ham scored with 9.7 seconds left to make it 58-54.

But Dylan Parker hit two free throws at the 4.2-second mark and the Warriors held 60-54.

Matt McDonald’s three-pointer at the buzzer accounted for the 60-57 final.

The Boomers, 18-7, started strong and built an early 16-7 leads as Kurt Ham scored eight points in the first period. The Boomers led 16-10 going into the second quarter.

Woodward led 21-13 after an Eric Smith trey early in the second period, but Anadarko closed the half with a 20-4 run to take a 33-25 lead. Bruce Kaulity led the Warrior charge with some big three-pointers.

Andrew Hickman, slowed by foul problems in the first half, scored eight straight points to start the third period and the Boomers tied the game at 33-33.

Woodward took a 38-37 lead on Stone’s three-point play, and the period ended in a 42-42 tie.

Anadarko got off fast in the fourth period, scoring seven straight points to go up 49-42.

The Boomers tried to answer as David Nelson scored to break the run momentarily, but five points was as close as the Boomers would get until the final seconds.

The Boomers finish the season with an 18-7 record.

Six seniors – Moore, Hickman, Ham, Stone, Ben Murray and Nelson. They combined for 51 of the Boomers 57 points in the game.
