Irish down the Boomers

Johnny McMahan

CHICKASHA - The Boomers gave top-ranked McGuinness all it wanted Friday, but the Irish used key runs in the third and fourth quarters to win the Class 4A Area 1 basketball championship here Friday night.

McGuinness, defending state champion in 4A, won 45-40 after leading by double digits much of the second half.

The Boomers cut a 16-point deficit to seven on a Matt Moore trey with 1:12 left, then McGuinness scored the next three points to put the game away.

Woodward's reserves scored five points in the last 15 seconds for the 45-40 final.

For the first half and part of the third period, the Boomers had the game at the pace they wanted and kept McGuinness superstar Daniel Orton from going off, especially on the offensive end.

A few missed opportunities early had the Boomers trailing 18-12 at the half.

It was still an eight-point game midway through the third quarter, before a 5-0 McGuinness run opened some separation at 29-16.

Austin Stone hit a trey for the Boomers, but Jeffrey Merritt countered with one for McGuinness and the score was 32-19 going into the fourth period.

The Boomers trimmed the lead to 10 before McGuinness went on a 6-0 run capped by two Orton free throws to lead 38-22.

Woodward battled back as Moore hit a three-pointer and David Nelson and Hickman had buckets. Eric Smith's three-pointer cut the lead to 41-32 with 1:36 remaining.

Moore's trey came after a McGuinness free throw.

Nick Johnson got the lead up to 43-35 with a point at the 57.2-second mark, then Orton added two more.

The Boomers were led by Moore with nine points and Hickman had seven. Nelson added six, Smith five, Kurt Ham and Stone four each, Chaunce Carrico three and Austin Miller two.

Orton had 10 for McGuinness, but the 6-10 high Division I recruit had only one field goal in teh game. Merritt and Ryan Randolph scored nine each.

The Boomers, 18-6, will take on Anadarko with the winner advancing to the state tounament. Woodward defeated Anadarko by a point a week ago in the regional finals.

McGuinness advanced by virtue of its win over the Boomers.

The state tournament starts next Thursday.
