Weight A Minute: Half Crazy

Woodward News

Woodward, Okla. — By Sheila Gay

Run. Run. Run.

 Breathe. Breathe.

Put one foot in front of the other.

 Grab a drink.

 Run. Run. Run.

Breathe. Breathe.

Repeat in a continuous cycle until you see the finish line.

I recently ran my first FULL marathon. As I inched up to the start line the only thing I'm telling myself is "just get through this. Don't think about it."

Yeah, right! Truth be told I kept it together the first 17 miles or so, but that last 9 were murder! After a mild round of drizzling rain, my feet hurt so much I could hardly run. The friction from sliding socks in your running shoes don't exactly make for the best conditions for your feet. Needless to say there was some walking involved. By then all I could think was, Lord please let this be the end.......but then there would appear a mile marker.....alas, still more miles to go. After awhile, the miles just seemed to be longer and longer and they took forever to end until the next mile. However, even with my feet practically on fire, I still felt pretty good and very conditioned for the challenge! That in itself was an accomplishment for me. Thanks to my running group, bike class and coach!

After 26.2 miles of surviving to the end, the only "pomp and circumstance" awaiting me was my wonderful family and two of my favorite friends, whom had finished their relay race several hours before me and waited for me to cross the finish line. Apparently, you have to finish the run in 6 hours and 30 minutes because they were all packed up and everyone was gone from the finish line. Yes, my time was slow (6 hrs and 46 minutes), but I finished! That being said, I think I should have at least gotten a bigger medal than my husband and a shirt that said I completed my first marathon. I mean when John did his first full in Tulsa, he received all of that. What's the deal?

Will I ever run a full marathon again? Perhaps, I will think about it, but for now, I'm only half crazy.
