Jean Stoner

Woodward, Okla. — Jean Stoner, 85 year old Woodward resident, died on Friday, June 28, 2013 in the St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Woodward with the Reverend Shannon Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward with Billings Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.  Viewing will be at the funeral home only.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.


Alva Jean (Johnson) Stoner was born on November 3, 1927 in Sharon, Oklahoma  to Noble L. and Ola Ruby (Huyck) Johnson.  Jean was reared in the Sharon and Woodward area.  She attended school in Sharon , graduating with the Sharon High School class of 1945. After high school Jean went on to attend Draughons Business College in Oklahoma City.


On October 10, 1948, Jean was united in marriage to Milton A. “Buster” Stoner at her parents home in Vici, Oklahoma.  They lived in several places their first year of marriage later, settling on a farm in the southwest part of Woodward County.  This remained their home until 1962 when they moved into Woodward.  Jean worked at Pop Snow’s Restaurant, Williams Auto, Goetzingter Abstract, Woodward Building and Loan, Western Finance and she worked seven years on the farm.  She also owned her own insurance and real estate business.  Together in 1972, Jean and Buster purchased Dressen Television Sales and Repair Shop which they ran for over twenty years.


Volunteering was a large part of Jeans life.   She spent over 30 years working for the American Red Cross Northwest Chapter, serving in the following offices, past chairmen, treasurer, secretary, blood program chairman, volunteered for disaster services and volunteer driver.   She was involved with the Woodward United Fund serving in the position of secretary, campaign worker, division drive chair and on the board of directors.  She also served on the Meals on Wheels Board of Directors.  Jean was the District Director for the Redlands Council of Girl Scouts.  Jean was on the Rodeo committee as well as president of the Lady Elks.  In 1987, Jean was board chairman for the Woodward Chamber of Commerce.  She was state president for the Business and Professional Women’s clubs in 1976 and 1977 and has been a member for over thirty five years.  Jean was named the State Career Woman of the Year in 1977.


Because of Jean and Buster’s work in the community they were both named as Woodward’s Citizen of the Year.  They were  only the second couple to win the coveted award in its history. Jean and Buster were a team, they did whatever needed to be done in the Woodward community, whether it was serving on a board, taking tickets for the Elks Rodeo, or working at Crystal Christmas.   


Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Buster in 2005 and six brothers Victor, Lafe, Leonard, Jesse, Edwin and Leland.


Jean is survived by 18 nieces and nephews and their families and numerous other relatives and friends.


Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Woodward Chapter, with the funeral home accepting the contributions.

    Jerome Roscoe Dimmitt was born on May 14, 1958 to Loren & Merle (Foster) Dimmit at Sublette, Kansas the youngest of nine siblings.  The family made their home in Sublette, Kansas. Jerome graduated from Sublette High School with the class of 1976. After graduation he went to work for a custom cutter following the harvest and later in Garden City doing cement pouring and finishing. The bulk of his working years was spent in the oil field business working in at least three different states.

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

    Clarence “Melvin” Wilson, 95 year old, True Woodward Cowboy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bible Baptist Church with the Reverend Jesse Johnson and Jerry Nine officiating. Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
