Marcella Hosier

Woodward, Okla. — Marcella Hosier, long-time Woodward resident and business woman, died peacefully at home August 24, 2013.  She was 92 years old.  She was born Marcella Clarice Whitcomb on December 30, 1920, in Quinlan, Oklahoma, to Rufus and Daisy (Frazier) Whitcomb.  She spent almost her entire life in the Woodward area and attended Woodward Public Schools.

Marcella Whitcomb met Harvol Johnson when he was helping build Boiling Springs State Park as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.  They married in 1938, and had two children:  Stephen Johnson and Carolyn Johnson.  The marriage ended in divorce, but Harvol and Marcella remained friends and good parents to their children until his death in 1993.

In 1963, Marcella married Henry Hosier, and together they owned and managed Hosier Real Estate.  Although this marriage ended after nearly 30 years, they remained good friends until Henry’s death in 2011.  Prior to Hosier Real Estate, Marcella’s work history included Ticer Motor Company and the Federal Land Bank Association, both in Woodward.

Mrs. Hosier was known for her “green thumb”  and beautiful plants, but even more for the canaries that she raised during much of her life.  The canaries provided much joy to her life  and filled her home with their beautiful songs.  She also delighted in her dog and cat, and in watching western movies.

Marcella Hosier overcame many obstacles in her life -- the effects of the Depression, little formal education, the Woodward tornado that completely destroyed her family home, and a massive stroke in 1981 that left her physically impaired and with very limited speech.  In her 92 years, she was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and a business woman.  Through it all, she remained strong, courageous, resourceful, generous, and a friend to many people.

Marcella Hosier was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Daisy Whitcomb, her sister, Fern Jacobs, her two brothers, Herschel Whitcomb and Donald Whitcomb, all of Woodward; and her son, Stephen Johnson, of Owasso, Oklahoma.

Mrs. Hosier is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Johnson, of Washington, D.C.; three nephews:  Gary Whitcomb and Merril Whitcomb of Woodward; and Barney Murray of Enid; four nieces:  Wynona Bartow, of Wichita, Kansas; Linda Poston and Karen Whitcomb of Woodward; and Jo Ann Thacker of Edmond.

In addition, Mrs. Hosier is survived by two grandsons:  Michael Johnson and Dustin Johnson of Tulsa; one step-grandson, Paul Ziriax of Edmond, and one step-granddaughter, Angi Ziriax of Tulsa.  Also four great-grandchildren:   Issac Johnson, Levi Johnson, Delilah Johnson, and Madeline Johnson, all of Tulsa; and one step-great-granddaughter, Allie Ziriax of Edmond.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Panhandle Nutrition Services of Woodward.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 29, 2013 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will be in the Mooreland Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
