Sylva Margie Woods

Woodward, Okla. —

Sylva Margie Woods Grantham, resident of the Shattuck Nursing Home passed from this life on August 17, 2013. Sylva was 96 years old. Sylva was born to Fred Asa and Annie May Bondrant Woods on May 7, 1917 at her family’s farm north of Arnett, Oklahoma.

Sylva attended Lone Star Elementary, Arnett High School, and Northwestern Oklahoma Teachers College. On May 11, 1935 Sylva married Frances Ray “Frank” Grantham in Alva, Oklahoma. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Janet Yvonne. They made their home southeast of Gage, Oklahoma. In 1941 they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and in 1943 they returned to the family farm which was later destroyed by a tornado in 1947. They also lived in Pampa, Texas, Groom, Texas, and Woodward, Oklahoma.

Sylva enjoyed working in her yard, drawing and painting, volunteering for anything and spending time with family. She was a member of the local Extension Homemakers Unit, the Democratic Party Committee, and she always attended art class.

Sylva was baptized in 1948. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Gage and the First Christian Church in Woodward. She played the piano, organ, worked as an officer for the Women’s Group and served as a Deacon and Elder.

Sylva was preceded in death by husband Frank in 1987, parents Fred and Annie May Woods, sister Ada and husband Raymond Branstetter, brother-in-law Roy and wife Orabelle Grantham, brothers Anson and wife Beulah, Chester and wife Grace, Nelson and wife Mary, Stacey and his wives Opal and Ellen, Acy and wife Alsie, Harold and wives Jackie and Velda, Ellis and wife Lenna.

She is survived by daughter Janet Schroeder of Gage, Oklahoma; grandsons Rex Schroeder and wife Linda of Gage, Ed Schroeder and wife Lorraine of Roll, Oklahoma, Tony Schroeder and wife Shelly of Gage Fred Schroeder and wife Rhonda of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Wayne Schroeder and wife Michelle of Christiana, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Claydon Hutson and wife Jenny, Lacy Burns and husband Auston, Cheyenne Wear and husband Colon, Katrina Schroeder, Sabina Barto and husband Alex, Killian Schroeder, Yancy Schroeder, Michael Schroeder and wife Vicky, Tyler Schroeder and wife Cassie, Clayton, Valerie, Libby, Zade, Brandon, Cole, Montana, Belle, and Shay Daily; great great-grandchildren, CD and Danny Hutson, Elmila and Eli Burns, and Keeley and Lexi Schroeder; sister-in-law Irma Woods; many nephews, nieces other family and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday August 21, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at the Gage High School, Gage, Oklahoma with interment following in Gage Memorial Cemetery, Gage, Oklahoma. Condolences may be made to the family at

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

    Clarence “Melvin” Wilson, 95 year old, True Woodward Cowboy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bible Baptist Church with the Reverend Jesse Johnson and Jerry Nine officiating. Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
