H.C. “Red” Hickman

Woodward, Okla. — H.C. “Red” Hickman, 87 year old retired  Woodward businessman, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 in Woodward.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the First Christian Church with the Reverend Jeremy Skaggs officiating.  Interment will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.


Herbert Clyde Hickman was born on January 19, 1926 in Hudson, Kansas; he was the son of Herbert Clyde and Mary Emma (McCrary) Hickman   He grew up in Stafford, Kansas and attended Stafford schools.  He went to work as a Roughneck in the oilfield for Hinkle Oil Company but was drafted in 1944.  Red served his country during World War II in the European Theater and the Pacific Theater.  He was honorably discharged in 1946 and went back to Kansas.  Red was united in marriage to Bonnie Belle Heimiller on June 15, 1953 at the First Christian Church Parsonage in Larned, Kansas.   They spent their early married life in Great Bend, Kansas, where their two sons Bradley Lynn and Gregory Scott were born.  Red worked for Stickle Drilling which later became Triad Drilling Company.  In 1961 the family moved to Woodward where Red was a Drilling Superintendent for Triad Drilling.  In 1975, Red and Bonnie founded Hickman Drilling, which he served as President until 1997.


Hickman Drilling was purchased by Unit Corporation in 1997.  Red had several companies interested in purchasing his company at the time, but instead of selecting the best financial offer, he selected the company that he thought would take the best care of his people.  Red continued working for Unit as a Division Supervisor until retiring in 2001.   After retiring, Red worked with his son Greg at Tri State Machine until it was sold in 2009.


He was a member of the First Christian Church and served as a Deacon, an Elder and served on the church board for over 30 years.  Red served on the Bank of Woodward Board of Directors for over 13 years, the High Plains Outreach Center Board, the Woodward Hospital Board, and the museum board.  Red was dedicated to his family and his community.

He is survived by one son, Brad Hickman and wife Debbie of Woodward; daughter-in-law, Jacque Hickman of Tulsa; grandchildren, Jonathan Hickman and wife Krystal of Denver, Colorado, Stacy Taylor of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Samantha Hickman of Norman; two sisters, Elizabeth Bradley of Kansas City, Missouri, Elnora Blanche Pennington of Lancaster, California; step-grandchildren, Talon, Cierra, and Bradon Christian; nieces, nephews and many friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Bonnie Belle Hickman on October 3, 2012, one son, Greg Hickman on November 14, 2010, and a half brother, Earl Krankenberg.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Greg Hickman Memorial Scholarship Fund with the funeral home accepting the contributions.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
