Billie Doreen McDowell, long time Woodward resident passed away August 26, 2013 at her home at the age of 85 years, 5 months, and 21 days. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2013 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Shane Rackley officiating. Interment will follow in Rock Church Cemetery.
Billie Doreen (Cooprider) was born on March 5, 1928 in Peek, Oklahoma to John William and Elenor (Berlien) Cooprider. Billie was reared on the family farm at Pack Saddle near Arnett, Oklahoma. She was next to the youngest of eleven children. Billie was in the Arnett High School class of 1946.
Billie married Burnis W. Gettle on December 25, 1946. To this union a daughter was born, Doreen. Burnis preceded her death. She was united in marriage to Charles Norman McDowell on October 15, 1947. Billie and Norman were blessed with three children, a son, Dwight and two daughters, Kae and Fae.
Billie has lived at her current residence in Woodward since 1955. Billie worked for 18 years at Woodward Livestock Auction Barn Café as a cook in the 50's and 60's. She also worked at Union Underwear Factory and Trego’s Western Factory in the 70's and 80's. Billie and her husband Norman owned McDowell’s Tropical Fish Store in the 70's. After Norman passed away in 1982, Billie joined the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, where she held numerous offices several times from auxiliary state and Local President to Guard. She was a charter member of the Moose Lodge, where she loved to go play bingo on Tuesdays.
She loved to fish, go camping, take bus trips to casino’s, play bingo and vacation with her family to many states, Canada, and Mexico. She sewed many of her families clothes, from beautiful western shirts to dresses and quilts. She did sewing for McDonald’s and ironed clothes for many business people in Woodward.
She is survived by her daughters, Ellen Doreen Gettle Mayfield and husband Kenneth of Arnett, Deloris Kae McDowell Coberley and husband Dennis and Darline Fae McDowell Beverlin of Woodward; grandchildren, Diana Mayfield Kraus, Deborah Mayfield, Susan Chase Severin, John Chase, David Chase, Sheila Coberley Digman, Charles Christopher Coberley, Shawn Coberley, Norma Coberley Allen and Billie “Kathy” Beverlin Martin and spouses; 34 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She loved the fact that she lived to have several in her 5th generations. Her sister Lucille Townsend of San Diego, California, three sisters-in-law, Lela Cooprider of Dampsey, Oklahoma, Mary McDowell of Ft. Supply, Donna McDowell of Woodward; other relatives and friends all of them loved by her but too many to name.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands Burnis in 1947 and Norman on September 11, 1982, son Dwight Norman McDowell on July 1, 1991, daughter-in-law, Eva in 1999, son-in-law, Kline Beverlin in 2006, grandson Lewis Chase II, great-granddaughter, Kamberlin Reid, her four brothers, five sisters and various relatives.
