Ethel Mae Dowty, 81 year old Woodward resident and former Dumas, Texas resident, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 in the Vici Nursing Home. Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday May 2, 2013 at Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Dumas, Texas. Services are under the direction of Billings Funeral Home of Woodward, Oklahoma.
Ethel Mae (Evans) Dowty was born on May 16, 1931 in Jacksonville, Florida to Morton Maurice and Elizabeth Thomas (Wrenn) Evans. She was reared in Jacksonville, Florida and also attended school there. Ethel attended and received her teaching degree from Morris Hill Women’s College in Morris Hill, North Carolina. She was united in marriage to Jim Finney Dowty on March 25, 1956 at the London Bridge Baptist Church in London Bridge, Virginia. To this union two children were born Martha and Jimmy. She was a school teacher in Virginia Beach, Virginia, New Deal, Texas and Dimmitt, Texas. Jim and Ethel moved to Dumas, Texas in 1970 and they lived there until 2008 when they moved to Woodward to be closer to their daughter Martha.
Ethel was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was involved with the Home Economist Club and was a 4-H leader. She loved cooking, fishing, reading and being with her family.
She is survived by her daughter Martha Feerer of Woodward; one brother Harry A. Evans of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two grandchildren, Leslie Feerer and wife Allyson, Kristen Feerer; three precious great-grandchildren, Jayden Pack, Rylie Feerer and Dylan Parker; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Paul Evans, one son, James Lee Dowty and her husband Jim on May 12, 2010.
