R.A. Lotspeich

Woodward, Okla. —   R.A. Lotspeich, 81 year old Rosston, Oklahoma, farmer and rancher passed away Friday, May 3, 2013.  The only son of Kenney and Osie Lotspeich, R.A. was born March 24, 1932, graduated Rosston High School 1949, and Oklahoma A & M in 1954 with a degree in agriculture.  During his college career, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and the college rodeo team, excelling in bull riding.  Having been an ROTC cadet at Oklahoma A & M, R.A. went on to serve as a 1st Lieutenant in the U. S. Army for two years and was honorably discharged in 1955.

After the service, R.A. returned to the Lotspeich homestead where he and his dad were partners until his dad’s retirement.  R.A. then took over the family business, and he also decided to make another life-changing decision by asking Rosalee Randolph, a Buffalo, Oklahoma beauty whom he had admired since grade school days, to marry him.  On December 31, 1959, in Dodge City, Kansas, R.A. and Rosalee were married.  Early on, the center of their marriage was their three children: daughter Jan, and sons Troy and Barry.  R.A. and Rosalee actively followed all the many sporting and school activities of their children as well as opening their ranch home to their children’s friends, who quickly became members of the Lotspeich extended family.  R.A. had a gift for mentoring young people, finding his greatest joy in directing them to attain their potential in life. To many of these, R.A. was a voice of confidence, encouraging them to be all they could be while expecting nothing in return.  As many will attest, especially his children and grandchildren, R.A. was a tough task master who expected a solid work ethic from those around him.  He knew dreams didn’t come true by just sitting around.  They took action and leadership skills, something R.A. had in full force.  As Rosalee stated, “R.A. was not afraid to take on that role of leader, but you better get in line and follow or get out of the way.”

In addition to his farming and ranching career, R.A. was an entrepreneur, blessed with a brilliant mind as well as his leadership abilities that aided him greatly in his business and personal relationships.  He and his partner J.C. Lively owned and operated L & L Dirt Company from 1956 to 1979.  A partner in the Buffalo Feedlot as well as one in Shattuck, Oklahoma, R.A. was active in many agricultural organizations. He was president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, president of Great Plains Wheat Association, and was a member of the Wheat Growers’ Association. R.A. founded the famous Tumbleweed in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He was also a licensed pilot and flew his private plane for many years.

All who knew R.A. also knew he loved race horses.  R.A. and Duane Hennigh co-owned Laverne Downs Race Track in the early 1960s to the mid ‘70s.  For many years, he and Rosalee have found immense pleasure and success in the breeding and raising of fine race horses, naming each one after their grandchildren when possible.

As a young man, R.A. accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized as a member of the Laverne First Baptist Church.  During his retirement years, he was an active member where he served as the chairman of the building committee during the church’s construction of a new fellowship hall.

During his life, R.A. met many people and developed an abundance of life-long friendships that he treasured.  He made it his business to know people and enjoyed people, no matter what road of life they traveled.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Louis Sanderson; nephews Kenny Seeger and Quentin Myatt; and nieces Debra Dale Seeger and Linda Brink.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife and dancing partner of 55 years, Rosalee; daughter Jan Hedges and husband Steve, Tyler, TX; sons, Troy and wife Becky, Rosston, OK, and Barry and wife Kim, Edmond, OK. Grandchildren include Tyson Hedges and wife Kymie, Bryan Hedges and wife Maggie; Amber, Justin, Jason, and Joshua Lotspeich; Lauren Lotspeich Miller and husband Easton, and Parker Lotspeich. He leaves two sisters, Joy Seeger Mahan, Laverne, OK and Alma Jo Lotspeich, Edmond, OK. He is also survived by five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shackelford Hall with the Reverend Donnie Scott officiating in Laverne, Oklahoma.  The family entrusted the Mason Funeral Home of Shattuck, Oklahoma with their arrangements.  Condolences may be made on-line at www.masonfuneralservice.com
