Bert Hoffner

Woodward, Okla. —

Bert Hoffner, 67 year old retired educator, died on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at his home in Woodward County. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Woodward, Oklahoma. Interment will follow in Gnadenfeldt Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Albert George “Bert” Hoffner was born on November 15, 1946, in Woodward, Oklahoma to George and Freda (Semmel) Hoffner. Bert spent his early years on the family farm near Fargo. He attended school in Fargo and graduated from Fargo High School with the class of 1964. Bert then enrolled at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. After attending college for one year, he signed up for the United States Army Reserve for basic training. After he returned from his basic training, he continued his education in college. He was united in marriage to Pamela K. Hardy on March 30, 1968, in Woodward, Oklahoma. Bert and Pam made their home in Alva, Oklahoma, where Bert completed his Bachelors Degree. Bert began teaching industrial Arts and coaching at the Mulhall-Orlando school district. Bert then completed his Masters degree. While there Bert was named as the Superintendent of Schools, serving in that capacity for one year. Bert and Pam eventually returned to the Woodward area where Bert worked as the Manager of Ace Hardware and then as an independent carpenter. Bert spent the remainder of his career as the Carpentry Instructor at the High Plains Area Vo-Tech School.

Bert enjoyed spending time with his family and was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He also spent his free time farming, ranching, collecting coins, doing leather work, and was known as a rock hound. Bert had a true passion for teaching, especially woodworking.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Woodward, Oklahoma.

Bert is survived by his wife Pam of the home; daughters, Amy Bates and husband Michael of Durant; Brenda Gartrell and husband Gary Don of Woodward; four grandchildren, Katelyn and Madison Gartrell; Braden and Dylan Bates; two sisters, Diane Harper and husband Jack of Calera, Darlene Simpson and husband Bill of Piedmont; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Freda Hoffner, and one sister, Donna Harris.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran  Church Building Fund with the funeral home accepting contributions.

    Jerome Roscoe Dimmitt was born on May 14, 1958 to Loren & Merle (Foster) Dimmit at Sublette, Kansas the youngest of nine siblings.  The family made their home in Sublette, Kansas. Jerome graduated from Sublette High School with the class of 1976. After graduation he went to work for a custom cutter following the harvest and later in Garden City doing cement pouring and finishing. The bulk of his working years was spent in the oil field business working in at least three different states.

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

    Clarence “Melvin” Wilson, 95 year old, True Woodward Cowboy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bible Baptist Church with the Reverend Jesse Johnson and Jerry Nine officiating. Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
