Woodward, Okla. — Olen Thomas 69, year old Woodward resident died Friday, May 17, 2013 in Oklahoma City.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday May 23, 2013 in the First Baptist Church with Reverend Guy McGraw officiating.  Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

 

Olen LeRoy Thomas was born in Woodward, Oklahoma to Charlie LeRoy and Lillie (Winstead) Thomas.  Olen was raised in Woodward, graduating from Woodward High School in 1962.  Olen worked at Otasco for a short time before entering the banking industry in 1964, a career lasting 45 years in various financial institutions in the Woodward area and retired in 2009 while employed at the Bank of Vici. He was united in marriage to Sharon E. Weiss in Enid, Oklahoma on June 2, 1963.  They made their home in Woodward and to this union two children were born.    Olen has always been a dedicated community supporter and actively involved in numerous local civic organizations.

 

Olen has been a member of the Woodward Elks Lodge since 1995 and served several years on the rodeo committee, a lifelong dream.  Olen said “As a kid growing up, Woodward Elks Rodeo was such a big event to me, my Dad always made sure I got to attend at least once and we always attended the parade.  In later years, Dad would load me and my horse up and I would ride in the grand entry, then I could get in to watch the performance every night.  It was a great honor for me to serve as the Grand Marshal.”  Olen also served on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Vici and the Woodward County EMS, and is a member of the Elks Rodeo Committee Old Buckers.

 

After his retirement, Olen enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at Foss Lake with his wife, and family.

 

Olen is survived by his wife Sherri of the home; son, Jon Thomas of Woodward; grandchildren, Jon Derick Thomas; Jon Dillon Thomas; Ashland Herbst; Kendra McCoy; Freddy McCoy all of Woodward; great-grandchildren, Jon Dayson; Derick Landry; Liam Michael; and soon too arrive Mya Nicole; aunts, Claudia Guthrie of Woodward; Georgia Lee Eubanks of Sallisaw; Esther Graham and husband Brady of Edmond; Faye O’Gorman of Loveland, CO; other family and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant son Lyn LeRoy Thomas.
