Violet Marie Stricker

Woodward, Okla. — Violet Marie Stricker, 96, of Woodward, Oklahoma went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 1, 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  Violet Marie was born on December 31, 1916, to Otis G. and Mary Pearl Blann, on their farm west of Woodward, Oklahoma.  She moved with her family to Cheyenne, Oklahoma, and then returned and attended Fargo High School.

On June 15, 1935, she married Oliver Stricker, also of Fargo.  They lived in Woodward until 1941, when they moved to San Diego, California.  While Oliver was serving as a Marine in WWII, Violet worked in an aircraft factory painting military planes.  She was very proud of her contribution to the war effort and talked about it often.  In 1950, they celebrated the birth of their first and only child, Joyce.  They returned to Woodward, Oklahoma in 1959, where they began Stricker Motors and later opened S&S Family Recreation Center.

She was a an accomplished seamstress and put her talent to work for a few years at Trego’s Western Wear.  Later, after Joyce graduated from high school, Violet worked at Wag-A-Bag at 15th and Oklahoma where she enjoyed seeing and serving customers.  In 1985, she and Oliver celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in November.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Woodward and was active in the UMW Phoebe Circle.  She also participated in Delta Sorosis, the Woodward County Demonstration  Club, and she volunteered as a “Pink Lady”, later known as the Woodward Regional Hospital Auxiliary, at the Woodward Hospital where she accumulated over 5000 hours of service.  She was an avid and competitive card player and in later years enjoyed many activities at the Senior Citizens Center in Woodward.  She was a loving mother and grandmother who always made time for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, her twin sister, Viola Burns, and her husband, Oliver.  She is survived by her daughter Joyce Haines and husband, Tim of Lexington, Oklahoma; three granddaughters, Tonya Jensen and husband, Craig of Pawnee, Oklahoma; Tammy Hixon and husband, Craig, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Trisha Rieman and husband, Chad, of Cushing, Oklahoma; and one grandson, Taylor Haines and his wife, Deana, of Woodward, Oklahoma;  six great-grandchildren, Natalie and Hadley Jensen, Cody and Trent Hixon, and Mason and Rhett Rieman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leslie and Dixie Stricker, Vernon and Lavoinne Stricker, and Wanda Stricker and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Jerome Roscoe Dimmitt was born on May 14, 1958 to Loren & Merle (Foster) Dimmit at Sublette, Kansas the youngest of nine siblings.  The family made their home in Sublette, Kansas. Jerome graduated from Sublette High School with the class of 1976. After graduation he went to work for a custom cutter following the harvest and later in Garden City doing cement pouring and finishing. The bulk of his working years was spent in the oil field business working in at least three different states.

    Dudley Blaylock was born January 29, 1945 in Higgins, Texas to Edith May and Dudley Jasper Blaylock.  He passed away July 16, 2014 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 69 years, 5 months and 17 days.

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

    Clarence “Melvin” Wilson, 95 year old, True Woodward Cowboy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bible Baptist Church with the Reverend Jesse Johnson and Jerry Nine officiating. Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
