Harold Hedges

Woodward, Okla. — Harold Hedges, 86 year old former Woodward and Laverne resident, died Friday, October 19, 2012 in Edmond. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 in the First United Methodist Church of Laverne with Reverend Roger Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Laverne Memorial Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Laverne American Legion. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home, Woodward.


Robert Harold Hedges was born on October 17, 1926 in Gate, Oklahoma to Robert Roy and Ada Mae (Clough) Hedges. He was reared on the family farm northeast of Gate and graduated from Rosston High School in 1944. Harold enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 at the age of 17 and served his country during World War II in the Phillipines. He was honorably discharged on July 4, 1946. Harold was united in marriage to Gloria Gale Dungan on November 10, 1946 at the United Methodist Church in Rosston, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Woodward and lived there from 1946 until 1955. After his discharge from the Navy, Harold worked for Bosch Electric in Woodward. He began his career with Phillips 66 with the purchase of his first service station in Woodward. In 1955, he sold the station to his brother, Carmen, and built a new station in Laverne in 1959. Eventually he expanded the business to include stations in Buffalo and Rosston. Harold also had a bulk delivery service delivering fuel to rural areas in Harper County. Harold was the recipient of several Phillips 66 awards. In 1972, he began his new career by joining Oklahoma Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent, and was promoted to become the Northwest Oklahoma District Sales Manager. Harold retired in 1992.


Harold was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Churches in Laverne and Woodward. He was active in the Lions Club, Laverne Chamber of Commerce, and was very devoted to his Masonic work and Shriner activities. He was Worshipful Master of the Laverne Lodge #453 in 1967. Harold was devoted to serving the town of Laverne, becoming the youngest mayor of the town at the age of 30. During his term as mayor, he lead the effort to pave and gutter all city streets. He was involved in the building of the hospital and was an early supporter of the Laverne Golf Course and Country Club. He had also served on the Laverne Town Board.


Harold and Gloria traveled extensively on Oklahoma Farm Bureau “All Star” trips. They enjoyed their vacation home in Red River, New Mexico, where they entertained family and friends throughout thee years. Harold’s family gave him the most enjoyment in life, especially his grandchildren, who called him “Pops”. He enjoyed playing golf and quail hunting with his family and he always enjoyed attending activities of his grandchildren.


He is survived by one daughter, Diana Lee and husband Marshall of Edmond; two sons, Steve Hedges and wife Jan of Tyler, Texas, and Bob Hedges and wife Marian of Burden, Kansas; seven grandchildren; Lezley Lynch and husband Steve, Steven Scoufos, Tyson Hedges and wife Kymie, Bryan Hedges and wife Maggie, Macey Panach and husband Matt, Drew Hedges and Katie Hedges; one brother, Carmen Hedges; several great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 64 years, Gloria on March 9, 2011.

    Jerome Roscoe Dimmitt was born on May 14, 1958 to Loren & Merle (Foster) Dimmit at Sublette, Kansas the youngest of nine siblings.  The family made their home in Sublette, Kansas. Jerome graduated from Sublette High School with the class of 1976. After graduation he went to work for a custom cutter following the harvest and later in Garden City doing cement pouring and finishing. The bulk of his working years was spent in the oil field business working in at least three different states.

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
