Bob Atkins

Woodward, Okla. — Bob Atkins, 73 year old Woodward resident, departed life on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at his home in Woodward.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Woodward.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home for visitation on Sunday, November 10, 2013 from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.  Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Robert Earl Atkins was born on November 21, 1939 to Arvis Lee and Francis Christine (Gibson) Atkins in Millport, Alabama.  Shortly after his birth, he moved with his parents to Houston, Texas where he attended school and graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1957.  He then attended and graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College, Huntsville, Texas with a degree in Business Administration in 1962.

He met the love of his life and married Sylvia Webb on January 1, 1960 in Houston, Texas. In January of 1961, Susan Lynette was welcomed into the world.  In 1962, after graduation, he began working for Chevrolet Motor Division in Houston, Texas where he continued for many years.  In March of 1963, they welcomed another baby girl into their family, Anita Kay.  Their family was now complete.

While working for Chevrolet Motor Division, he moved his family from Houston, Texas to Enid, Oklahoma, Plainview, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma and finally to Edmond, Oklahoma.  He received his last transfer with Chevrolet in 1974 when he was transferred to Detroit, Michigan.  He made the decision to leave Chevrolet and went into partnership with Grant Irwin and they purchased Baker Chevrolet from Harold Baker in Woodward, Oklahoma.  Bob and Grant  opened Irwin Chevrolet in 1975, the building was located in the city parking lot and the car lot was where Stock Exchange Bank is located today.

In 1978, he bought his own dealership from Bill Thomas and fulfilled his life long dream of owning his own car dealership.  He changed the name to Bob Atkins Buick, Pontiac, GMAC, and Toyota.  He loved meeting people and selling cars, he always teased that everything that he owned was for sale, even Sylvia and definitely his girls. He prided himself in remembering  everything about his customers because that was extremely important to him.

In 1998, he sold the dealership and retired so that he and Sylvia could travel and live the life, meeting new people.  They traveled around the United States in a motor home and visited all but two states and made life long memories.  He always commented that they would never settle in Florida like many people did, because they were not blue haired.

In February of 2001, he suffered a stroke that left him handicapped and they sold the motor home and purchased a lake house on Grand Lake.  Once again he was in his element of meeting people and loving life.  Special friends that he met were Bill and Jess Drumeller and family, they brought lots of special times and have been thought of as family.  He enjoyed living six months of the year in Woodward and six months at the lake.  While at the lake, he enjoyed attending church with Sylvia at Cleora Baptist Church.  When living in Woodward, he was a member of First Baptist Church.

Family was very important to him.  He only had the two daughters but six special grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren with one of them due any day.

He is survived by Sylvia of the home and his beloved dog, Shasta.  Daughters: Lynette and Vic Terbush and Anita and Mark Marriott of Woodward.  Grandchildren: Anthony and Sharla Marriott, of Indianapolis, Indiana, Valarie Holcombe of Woodward, Cynthia Terbush and Waylon Glitsch of Yukon, Oklahoma, Alishia and Brad Brown of Vici, Oklahoma, Trey and Danielle Terbush of Mooreland and Elizabeth Terbush of Woodward.
