Ron McVicker

Woodward, Okla. — Ron McVicker 77 year old longtime Woodward business man died Thursday, October 31, 2013 in Mooreland.  Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm Monday, November 4, 2013 in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Orville White officiating.  Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Ronald Earl McVicker was born on March 11, 1936 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to John Edward and Susan Margaret (DeVore) McVicker.  Ron was reared on the family farm near Spencer.  Ron spent his youth as constant companion and Best Friend to his grandfather, George McVicker who always referred to Ron as “Honey Boy”.  Upon graduation from Jones High School, Ron enlisted in the United States Army.  He served two tours during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed on the 38th parallel with both the 82nd and 101st Paratrooper Divisions and was honorably discharged in 1959.  Ron was united in marriage to June Henning in 1958 and to this union three children were born, Susie, Pat and John. Ron was united in marriage to Lou Ann Craighead in 1979 and in June of this year they celebrated their 34th anniversary.  Ron was adamant that her children, Gary, Shelle, Stacie and Susan were his children also.

After his military service he returned to the Oklahoma City area and began his lifelong career in the Oilfield Pipe Inspection Industry.  He worked first for Tuboscope then for Arrow Pipe Service, and eventually founding his own company in 1971.  Ron is considered by many a pioneer in that industry and perfected many methods still used today.  Ron moved to the Woodward area in 1965 and has remained here the majority of his life.

Ron started his auto racing driving career while stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia during his military service.  Ron drove all types of dirt oval track race cars throughout his young life.  He was always considered a fierce competitor and received much notoriety throughout his long racing career.

Although a large and sometimes intimidating man, Ron always fostered a great love of animals.  He devoted much of his later life to rescuing and caring for unwanted cats and dogs.  He was a member of many civic and community organizations.  Throughout his life Ron delighted in assisting any person in need.  He gave his time and resources without reservation.

Ron is survived by his wife Lou Ann; sons, Pat McVicker; John McVicker; stepchildren, Gary Craighead; Shelle Spray; Stacie Stuart; Susan Grubb; longtime friend and forever Crew Chief, Dennis Lynes; caregiver, Angie Kizer; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and his wet nosed furry friend, Ruby Lou; several other family members and freinds.
