Lamont Munsell

Woodward, Okla. — Lamont Munsell, 92 year old Mooreland resident, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in the Mooreland Heritage Manor.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Mooreland.  Burial will follow in the Mooreland Cemetery.  Military rites will be conducted by the United States Army.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home of Mooreland.

Arlo Lamont Munsell was born on April 21, 1921 in Mooreland, Oklahoma to Noble James and Anna Olive (Aller) Munsell.  Lamont was reared on the family farm near Mooreland and attended the Paradise Country School north of Mooreland before going to the Mooreland schools.  He graduated from Mooreland High School in 1939.  Lamont was inducted into the United States Army on October 3, 1942.  He served his country during World War II in Rome and Florence, Italy.  He was wounded twice during war time and received a Purple Heart. Lamont also received an Infantry Combat Badge, one Battle Star and an Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged on April 27, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Verla Marcine (Donovan) Stine on October 17, 1969 at Fairview, Oklahoma.  They made their home in Mooreland and have continued living there since that time.

Lamont was a farmer and rancher who enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, hunting, gospel music, country/western but most of all his family.  Lamont was always helping his grandchildren have a good time whenever they visited.  He would play dominoes and card games with them, as well as get down on the kitchen floor to run a toy train.  He always found turtles for them to enter in the 4th of July races, and watching fireworks from Lamont and Verla’s backyard was a family tradition. Easter egg hunts were more fun at Grandpa’s and Grandma’s.  He laughed easily and often at their jokes and antics.  He was a great grandpa!  As his grandson Bryan said, “He was the best grandpa anybody could have!”

Lamont was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Verla Munsell of the home; step-son, Ronal Stine and Debby Stine of Woodward; three step-daughters, Randa Phillips and husband Robert of Atwood, Oklahoma, Joyce Stine of El Paso, Texas; Nancy Green and husband Charles of Mooreland; five step-grandchildren, Angela Swearingen; Monte York and wife Barbi; Ashlee Pape and husband Aaron; Stacey Aloui and husband Tufik; Bryan Nyambyi; six step-great-grandchildren, Jordan York James, Mackenzie York, McKellee and Zoee Pape, Brandon and Andrew Soares; numerous other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Noble and Anna Munsell;  brothers, Lyman Munsell and Frances Munsell; sisters, Fairy Haller and Meryle Haskins; step-daughter Clarice Bratcher; and a  step-grandson-in-law, Greg Swearingen.
