Woodward, Okla. —
Vernon L. Lumpkin Sr., 65 year old Woodward resident, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his home in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Ed Dowty officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the United States Army.
Vernon Lee Lumpkin was born on January 15, 1948 to Vernon and Nancy Morean (Snelson) Lumpkin. Vernon attended school until the 11th grade and was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War in 1965. He served his country and was honorably discharged in Fort Poke, Louisiana in 1968.
He was a member of the New Covenant Church in Woodward. He enjoyed being with his family.
He lived all over the southern United States and moved to Elk City in 1994. He was united in marriage to Sherry Lumpkin in Elk City, Oklahoma in the Fairview Church. They made their home in Elk City before moving to Fort Supply and Woodward. Vernon worked as a Roughneck in the oilfield for over 40 years before his retirement.
Vernon is survived by his father Vernon Lumpkin of Tennessee; one son Vernon Lee Lumpkin Jr.; Sherry’s children, numerous grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his wife Sherry on November 1, 2012.
