James “Jim” Hancock

Woodward, Okla. —

James “Jim” Hancock 88 year old Woodward resident, died Friday, August 9, 2013 in the Clinton Veterans Center. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Ed Laird officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

James William Hancock was born on February 13, 1925 in Poteau, Oklahoma to Earl and Ruby (Kinsey) Hancock. Jim was reared in the Poteau area in his early years and attended the Poteau schools. He entered the United States Navy and served his country for many years during World War II, Vietnam and The Korean Conflict. He obtained Master Chief status while serving on The USS Iowa, The USS Renville, The USS Gurke, The USS Chicago and The USS Cayuga. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star as well as many other medals during his service.

Some of the highlights of his military career were being in two movies that were being filmed aboard the USS Cayuga. He also played baseball against the Tokyo Giants while playing for the Navy All-Stars.

On July 6, 1957 in Wichita Falls, Texas, he married the love of his life Tressie Maurine Whatley. They were blessed with one child, Selena Kaye.

After his military career Jim worked in the oil and gas industry as a salesman.

Jim had many hobbies including baseball, softball and golf. He also enjoyed country music and dancing. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and received his 50 year pin.

He is survived by his wife Maurine Hancock of Woodward; daughters Kaye Kurtz and husband Dennis who was very special to Jim of Woodward; Martha McDaniel and husband Bill of Conway, Arkansas; four sons, Merle Chapman and wife Debbie of Moore; Jack L. Hancock and wife Sheryl of Vilonia, Arkansas; James Carl Hancock of Pollock, Texas and James Earl Hancock Jackson of Norman; step-daughter Bobby Johnson and husband Jim of Heavner, Oklahoma; five sisters, Nita Chambliss of Austin, Texas; Sue Gould of Midland, Texas; Sondra Howard of Sapulpa; Judy Chandler of Poteau; Linda Horne of Sapulpa; two brothers Don Robinson and wife, Mary of Midland, Texas, Bob Phillips of Shawnee; grandchildren Jeremy Allison and wife Kori , Jason Allison and wife Niki, JustinAllison and wife Kandice , Jason “Bubba” Kurtz; Jack Hancock and wife Alyson, Nicole Aldridge and husband Drew, Debra Posey and husband Donald, Jaime Jackson and Darrell Jackson; 14 great- grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Jack L. Hancock and Ronnie Phillips.

    Jerome Roscoe Dimmitt was born on May 14, 1958 to Loren & Merle (Foster) Dimmit at Sublette, Kansas the youngest of nine siblings.  The family made their home in Sublette, Kansas. Jerome graduated from Sublette High School with the class of 1976. After graduation he went to work for a custom cutter following the harvest and later in Garden City doing cement pouring and finishing. The bulk of his working years was spent in the oil field business working in at least three different states.

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

    Clarence “Melvin” Wilson, 95 year old, True Woodward Cowboy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bible Baptist Church with the Reverend Jesse Johnson and Jerry Nine officiating. Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Rock Church Cemetery, northwest of Woodward.  Military rites will be conducted by the United States Army. Burial will follow with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
