Vera Wheeler

Woodward, Okla. — Vera Wheeler, 77 year old Woodward resident, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in the Woodward Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Crown Heights Baptist Church with the Reverend Steven Bearden officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Vera Vivian (Strange) Wheeler was born on November 23, 1935 in Rinard, Illinois to Thomas Oliver and Millie Mary (Reynolds) Strange. Vera was reared in the Rinard, Illinois area and attended country schools in Clay County. On February 27, 1954, she was united in marriage to her best friend and life long love Gerald D. Wheeler in Shawneetown, Illinois. They followed the oil field in their early marriage living in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Kansas, finally settling in Oklahoma. They were blessed with four children, Beverly Ann, Gerald Dean Jr., Timothy Lee, and Marsha Lynne. Vera stayed home and took care of her children but she also worked at Tregos, and provided an in-home day care. The last several years she worked at Wal-Mart.

Vera was a member of the Crown Heights Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Vera and Gerald loved spending time at the casino.

She is survived by her four children, Beverly Shaw of Pratt, Kansas, Gerald Dean Wheeler Jr. and wife Tina of Woodward, Tim Wheeler and wife Margee of Woodward, Marsha Scott and husband Bobby Joe of Liberal, Kansas; grandchildren, Jenelle Clemons, Kelly Wheeler and wife Melia, Darrell Shaw Jr. and wife Ashley, Rhiannon Wheeler, Lacy West and husband Aaron, Desiree Wheeler, Lindsay Wheeler, Joey Scott; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister Hazel Hillyer of Xenia, Illinois; special friend, Erin Bos of Woodward; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald on November 19, 2005, four sisters, Virginia, Eva, Beulah, Jennell and five brothers, Frances, Elden, Thomas Jr., Gaylen, and Lester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Panhandle Nutrition with the funeral home accepting the contributions.

    Matthew William Beers was born on February 6, 1917 at Arnett, OK. His mother died when he was a baby, and he was adopted by an aunt and uncle, Mark and Ollie (Allgire) Beers. Matthew grew up in the Harmon community and attended school in Arnett. He married Della Cooper on July 20, 1941 in the home of his parents. Shortly after marriage, Matthew entered the Army during World War II, where he served as a Medic. He returned to the Harmon community after his discharge.
