Matthew William Beers was born on February 6, 1917 at Arnett, OK. His mother died when he was a baby, and he was adopted by an aunt and uncle, Mark and Ollie (Allgire) Beers. Matthew grew up in the Harmon community and attended school in Arnett. He married Della Cooper on July 20, 1941 in the home of his parents. Shortly after marriage, Matthew entered the Army during World War II, where he served as a Medic. He returned to the Harmon community after his discharge.
Matthew and Della moved to Canton in 1953 to pastor the Full Gospel Church on Main Street from 1953 to 1970. Matthew worked for several farmers until he was hired at the U.S. Gypsum Plant at Southard. He retired from U.S.G. after 28 years of employment.
Matt also ministered a church in Lenora for several years. In later years he served as pastor at the Longdale Community Church from 1980 until 2000, all the while working full time at U.S.G. Matt traveled many miles visiting the sick and comforting the bereaved. He volunteered his help at the funeral home in Canton when the owner became ill with a terminal disease. He was always willing to help with the ambulance which was operated by the funeral home at that time. His life has touched so many lives in and around our communities either in marriage, sickness or death.
Matthew and Della moved to Okeene for several years, then moved into the Fairview Fellowship Home and was there for several years. They later moved into the nursing home in Midwest City to be near Della's sister. Matthew departed this life on Friday, April 4, 2014 at Midwest City, OK.
