Roy Evert Johnson

Woodward, Okla. — Roy Evert Johnson, longtime Buffalo resident, died Saturday, August 24th at the age of 84.  Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Buffalo on Wednesday, August 28th at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be in the Gyp Cemetery under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

On August 30, 1928, Roy was born in a dugout in Gyp Valley, Oklahoma, the eleventh child of William “Bill” and Martha Jane (Prophet) Johnson.  At an early age, he and his family moved to California, but they returned to Buffalo.  In high school, Roy was the quarterback for his football team, and he and his sweetheart since 7th grade, Bernita Cheap, were named Buffalo High School’s Homecoming King and Queen.  On June 19, 1949, Roy and Bernita were married in the Christian Church in Buffalo.

Roy and his brother Jimmy opened Johnsons Shop in Buffalo, because Roy was a natural mechanic...he didn’t replace parts, he fixed them so that they wouldn’t need to be replaced.  Roy could fix anything mechanical.  In 1956, Roy went to work for the Oklahoma State Highway Department as a diesel mechanic and eventually worked his way up to shop foreman; he retired in 1990 after 34 years of service.  Roy also served as a volunteer fireman in Buffalo.

Roy was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Buffalo, where he served as a deacon.  He was a strong Christian man, who lived a life of steadfast faith.

Roy and Bernita were blessed with four children: Randy, Rick, Sandy, and Sherri.  They made their home in Buffalo and raised all their children there.  In 2012, after 63 years of marriage, Roy lost his beloved Bernita.

Roy is survived by his four children, Randy Johnson and wife Ruth of Burlington, North Carolina; Rick Johnson and wife Joyce of Buffalo; Sandy Johnson of Woodward; and Sherri Verble of Edmond; nine grandchildren, Ben, Rachel, Amy, Emily, Brent, Melissa, Chace, Cole, and Chyann; one brother, Paul Johnson and wife Dottie of Haysville, Kansas; one sister, Lela Williams of Ardmore; nineteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, along with a host of cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, eight of his brothers and sisters, and his son-law Paul Verble.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Vision India, with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
