Alvin Covalt

Woodward, Okla. — Alvin Covalt 93 year old life long Woodward resident died January 5, 2014 in Mooreland.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the Woodward Church of Christ with James Bailey, Jim Rucker, and Gordon Lawson officiating.  A private interment was held at Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Alvin Charles Covalt was born on September 14, 1920 to Oscar and Mary (Benne) Covalt in Woodward County.  God was an important part of Alvin’s life.  He was a Christian and member of the Woodward Church of Christ.  During his lifetime he served as a Sunday School Teacher and as an elder.


Alvin started working on a paper route when he was eight years old and sold papers for five cents.  His family ran Dr. Forney’s dairy for a number of years.  While he was in high school, Alvin worked for Dr. W.R. Hunter at the drugstore in Woodward as manager.   Alvin and brother Jim ran a custom hay business to earn money to go to school.  Alvin excelled at sports and also enjoyed watching them.  He played quarterback and halfback on the Woodward High School team.  Alvin also played baseball for the American Legion in Woodward for a number of years.  He was given several awards while in school for never being absent or tardy all twelve years.  Alvin graduated from Woodward High School in 1939.  He then attended the Woodward Junior College from 1939 until 1941.


Alvin enlisted in the army in 1942.  He worked in the Army Air Corp as a Medical Technician and Medical Administrative Specialist.  He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He was awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon.  Alvin was honorably discharged in 1946.


Alvin  attended Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater.  He graduated from Northwestern State College  with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Physical Education.  While at Northwestern he was Student Council President.  After college he started a cow, calf operation as well as a custom hay business.


On August 15, 1953 he married Nina Dell Burrus and to this union four children were born, Mona, Jan, Kyle, and Rita.  Alvin worked as Deputy Assessor to Ruby Lahr and almost three terms as Woodward County Assessor.  He then went to work as manager of the Federal Land Bank on March 21, 1966.  Alvin left the bank to pursue a career in real estate in 1974.  He earned his real estate and broker license.  Alvin formed his business, Alvin C. Covalt Real Estate, on Oklahoma Avenue in Woodward.  He enjoyed working in real estate along with his partner Eldon (Bud) Nelson.  Alvin and Bud enjoyed friends Gordon Lawson, Bill Williams, Allen Covalt, Basil Martin and others who stopped by to drink coffee.  Alvin served on the MAPC Board for several years.


Alvin and Nina spent time taking care of cattle, cutting posts, firewood, raising large gardens and being with family.  They also enjoyed trips to see the country and family.


Alvin is survived by his children, Mona Covalt of Canton; Jan Carter and husband Dwight of Sulphur; Kyle Covalt and wife Valerie of Woodward; Rita Reeves and husband Kevin of Woodward; grandchildren, Kyle Covalt II; Shelby Reeves; Ashley Reeves; Kade Covalt; Brooklynn Carter; Jordan Carter; Lily Carter; Faith Carter; and Patricia Pulley; sister, Verta Charmasson of Woodward; sister-in-law, Betty Covalt of Colorado Springs, CO; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 60 years Nina, five sisters, Ruby, Helen, Erma, Verla and Norva, brother, Jim and five brothers-in-law.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodward Church of Christ with the funeral home accepting the contributions.

    Jerome Roscoe Dimmitt was born on May 14, 1958 to Loren & Merle (Foster) Dimmit at Sublette, Kansas the youngest of nine siblings.  The family made their home in Sublette, Kansas. Jerome graduated from Sublette High School with the class of 1976. After graduation he went to work for a custom cutter following the harvest and later in Garden City doing cement pouring and finishing. The bulk of his working years was spent in the oil field business working in at least three different states.

    Edith Ann Nichols, a former resident of Woodward, was born May 17, 1934 in Rives, TN. She died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at her home in Dyersburg, TN.

    She was a faithful Christian with ultimate faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, J.T. and Lorena Tubbs of Memphis, TN and a sister, Patsy Nell Tubbs.

  • Norman Vanderslice Norman Vanderslice

    The world lost a special person on Thursday, July 17, 2014. Norman Vanderslice was born on December 29, 1971 in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Ronnie and Norma (Semmel) Vanderslice.  He grew up on the family farm in Fargo, Oklahoma and graduated from Fargo High School in 1990.  Norman was a farmer who loved being outside. He took care of running the family farm his entire life. Norm loved coyote hunting with his friends and was known for always helping others. The greatest love of his life was his son, Colton, who he proudly raised. They lived on a farm west of Woodward.

    Clarence “Melvin” Wilson, 95 year old, True Woodward Cowboy, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Bible Baptist Church with the Reverend Jesse Johnson and Jerry Nine officiating. Burial will follow at the Shirley Cemetery in Leedey under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
