The iPhone 5, which is scheduled to reach stores Sept. 21, is the best smartphone on the market, map-software flaws aside, according to Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal. Ed Baig of USA Today said the device keeps Apple ahead of rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co., and Rich Jaroslovsky of Bloomberg called it the "handsomest phone you can buy."

Cause of fire at welding shop under investigation
Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a welding shop on the west side of Woodward on Wednesday afternoon.
No one was injured in the fire, which broke out around 12:35 p.m. at a welding facility owned by Diamond Services.
Will golf course close?
City has terminated lease with JCLA Enterprises for managment of Boiling Springs Golf Course, effective Sept. 16. However, City Manager Alan Riffel said that city hopes to keep course open, but determining how to do that will take some time.

City issues response to FAA report
Woodward City Attorney Aaron Sims has sent a reply to the the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding a recent compliance inspection report that alleged the city improperly handled airport property.
Benefit Poker Run
More than 100 motorcycle enthusiasts rolled out their bikes on Aug. 11, 2012 for a benefit poker run in support of Woodward Firefighter Steve Smith, who is undergoing treatment for liver cancer. The poker run was organized by the Red Knights of Oklahoma, a motorcycle group comprised of active and retired firefighters.
"That's what the Red Knights do, we help firefighters and firefighters' families and burn victims," said Steve Jones, who is state association president for the Red Knights. "It's a brotherhood, so we came to help out a brother."
Through entry fees for the poker run, bids on silent auction items after the run, and other generous donations, the Red Knights were able to present Smith with a check for over $8,300 to help with his medical and travel expenses.
