Woodward, Okla. —
Ham radio enthusiasts are in for a treat as the Tri State Amateur Radio Group will be holding a Ham Fest and Computer show at the Mooreland Community Center on Feb. 2.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"A whole bunch of amateur radio operators get together, like an amateur radio swap meet.," Melissa Wilkerson with the Tri-State Amateur Radio Group, said. "They bring anything and everything that has to do with ham radios, whether it be the computer part or the radio parts or even radios they're interested in getting rid of. It’s like one huge radio swap meet."
Wilkerson said the Tri-State organization is based out of Woodward and has been promoting amateur radio use providing public services since the mid-1990s. The group has worked with Emergency Management director Matt Lehenbauer in times of disaster, such as the tornado that hit Woodward last April, to provide communication when other forms were unavailable.
Wilkerson said ham radio is still relevant in todays high tech society.
"It's hard for us to promote our hobby because of internet and cell phones, but things can happen and phones and computers can lose reception or signal. If you're an amateur radio operator, you're never without communication," Wilkerson said.
The upcoming show is pen to public and Wilkerson encourages anyone interested in looking into amateur radio to come out to gain some information on the subject.
"We're working on getting one of the reps from the American Radio Relay League to come out as a guest speaker. We're also going to have a booth set up for the ARRL that has information on ham radio," she said.
In addition, Wilkerson encourages the general public to come out and talk with amateur radio operators at the event to learn more.
"We're a friendly bunch of great people and we want to get the word out about our group and what we do. Everyone should come out, its going to be a great time," Wilkerson said.
A lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers will also be provided during the show. People who would like to reserve a table for their party can contact Melissa Wilkerson at 334-6201 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
