Major County Fair opens Aug. 23

Woodward, Okla. — FAIRVIEW  -  Plans are being finalized for the annual Major County Fair set for Aug. 23 through 25 at the county fairgrounds.

Dana Baldwin, OSU Extension Educator-Family and Consumer Sciences, said that on Thursday, Aug. 23, activities run from 4 to 8 p.m. when entries for Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE), Agriculture, Open, 4-H and FFA non-livestock exhibits are registered and placed. Also, entries for the Aug. 25 Horse Play Day will be accepted.

Baldwin said the Horse Play Day, at nearby Wrangler Field, will feature "fun classes, like flag races, barrel races and pole bending, with ribbons for the winners."

Baldwin said exhibitors in the open contests must be residents of Major County. They will compete for plaques and trophies similar to what the OHCE, agriculture and 4-H/FFA participants receive.

"They will show crafts, photography, livestock, canned foods -  a wide variety of items," she said.

Barns will be open to livestock at 4 p.m.

At 6 p.m. Major County Young Farmers and Ranchers will sponsor a fundraising mud volleyball contest.

Monica Wahl of the Major County Farm Bureau said the coed event should have 6 players on each team.

"We have 5 teams signed up already," she said,

Teams interested in taking part can contact Wahl at the Farm Bureau, (580) 227-4710 by Aug. 22.

Prizes include cash and the winning squad will also receive T-shirts, Wahl said.

Here is the schedule for the rest of the fair.

Friday, Aug. 24

9 a.m. - Livestock must be in place. Judging of all entries,  as well as rabbit, poultry and ag projects. Entries close for Horse Play Day.

9:30 a.m. - Livestock judging contest.

11 a.m. - Livestock weight cards due.

4 p.m. - Sheep show, followed by goat show.

5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Commercial booths open.

Slots for the commercial booths will be available until those times, said Extension Educator-Ag/4-H Jim Rhodes, and entries are currently being accepted for a variety of items. He said that in the past, exhibits have included various art and crafts, "and even water purification equipment."

7 p.m. - Ice Cream Social.

Saturday, Aug. 25

8 a.m. - Swine show, followed by bucket calf show and then beef show.

Baldwin explained that bucket calves are small, and are led on a rope by equally-small kids to try and make the calves eat from a bucket.

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Commercial booths are open.

Noon to 1 p.m. - Free meal.

5 p.m. - Horse Play Day at Wrangler Arena.

A complete fair book is available at the Major County OSU Extension Office in the courthouse, 500 E. Broadway, Suite 3.
