Garage sales galore scheduled on Saturday

Woodward, Okla. — Whether you're looking to buy or sell, this weekend's townwide garage sale is for you.

Held twice a year, the townwide garage sale has become "a real event," according to Christine Kirbie, classifieds consultant for The News, which sponsors the townwide sale.

Because of this she said the townwide draws "a huge turnout usually."

Shoppers come out because they know there will be a lot of selection at all the sales, she said, noting this year is no different.

With 26 sales already being advertised for this Saturday's townwide, Kirbie said, "We've got everything: clothes, furniture, home decor, books, TVs, kitchen items, exercise equipment and more."

With so many sales and good finds to be had, she recommended a few tips for those shopping the townwide this Saturday:

• test a product before purchasing, such as asking to plug electrical items in to see if they work;

• if looking for a particular size of item take a tape measurer with you; and

• take sacks or boxes to help carry things and old newspapers to wrap fragile items in (the paper does sell paper bundles in case you need extra wrapping material).

For those looking to sell their items, Kirbie said they won't find a wider customer base than during the townwide weekend.

"People do come out for the townwide more often than they do for the regular sales," she said.

If you're looking to get in Saturday's townwide event, Kirbie said there is still time to submit an ad for your sale.

"They have until Thursday at 11 a.m. to get their ad in," she said.

In addition to more potential customers, Kirbie said other benefits to holding a garage sale during townwide weekend.

The biggest is the special advertising rate of only $25 per ad, which this year includes not only an unlimited line length but also framing around the ad to help it stand out.

The fee also includes a garage sale kit which is comprised of 2 sale signs, pricing labels, inventory sheets and a rain check.

"Usually there is an additional fee for the boxed and for the kit," Kirbie said, but for the townwide it is all included in one price.

As another benefit, she said, "we publish the town map with the sale ads so it's easier for people to find the sales."
