Woodward, Okla. — High Plains Technology Center is offering a defensive driving course this weekend that can benefit local drivers in a number of ways.

The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday inside the energy training center located to the southwest of the High Plains main campus.

Sheila Reazin, administrative assistant for the HPTC Business and Industry Services program, said that the class is certified by the Oklahoma Safety Council and will be taught by a retired Oklahoma Highway Patrol driving instructor.

Reazin said the course will help participants "to become a better driver, lower your insurance rate, and take points off of your driving record; that would be the big pluses."

Those who complete the defensive driving course will have the opportunity to earn a 2-point reduction on their driving records, she said.

In addition, she said, "a lot of insurance companies will offer you a discount if you participate in a defensive driving class."

With so many potential benefits of the driving course, Reazin said, "hopefully some people will take advantage of it."

For more information about the course, or to register to attend the course, call Reazin at (580) 571-6167.

She said that those wanting to attend are encouraged to register in advance by calling before noon on Friday.

However, if they forget to call, Reazin said they can still participate in the class as long as they show up before 9 a.m. on Saturday.

There is a fee for the class which is due at the time of the class, she said.
