Woodward, Okla. — Several local pastors invite the public to join them in praying for our society as part of the National Day of Prayer this Thursday.

"We're going to have prayer for an hour from noon to 1 p.m.," said Eric Cox, local chair for the National Day of Prayer event.

With cold temperatures expected and snow possible on Thursday, the event has been moved inside to be held at Living Word Fellowship Church at 13th St. and Oklahoma Ave.

Before the hour of prayer begins, Cox said that Woodward Mayor Roscoe Hill will present a proclamation recognizing the event.

"Then we have 9 local pastors who are coming together to pray for the different entities in our community," he said.

The following is the prayer schedule, listing which pastor will be praying on which subject:

Pastor Lee Oran Stinson - Repentance

Pastor Shane Rackley - Churches and Family

Pastor Jeremy Skaggs - City and County Government

Pastor Steve Bearden - State and Federal Government

Pastor Dane Looman - Military

Pastor Guy McGraw - Education

Pastor Ed Dowty - Media

Pastor Ray Blakley - Business

Then to complete the hour of prayer, Pastor Shawn Johnson will give a benediction.

Cox said the prayer subject areas are intended to try and encompass "everything our society and culture revolves around."  And the purpose of praying for these different areas of society is "because we want God's guidance in all that we do and also we want to thank Him for His goodness in our lives and community," he said.

Cox also noted that the National Day of Prayer "is a really vital part of our heritage" as Americans.

"The first call to prayer was in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in the forming of our nation," he said.

Cox said that everyone from the community is invited to attend the National Day of Prayer.  In fact, he said that is why the prayer event is scheduled during the noon hour, "so those who have a lunch hour at work at that time may have the opportunity to join us."
