Woodward, Okla. —
It's a fairly new tradition that is catching on big in Woodward - the Mayor's Blues Concert.
Talk to any music lover and they will tell you, it's the place to be on a Saturday night for a few hours of some of the best Blues music in the state.
This year, the concert will take place Saturday, Aug. 24 at Crystal Beach Park at the bandshell, said event coordinator Debbie Hickman of the Woodward Convention and Visitors Bureau. The concert will begin at 7 p.m.
"We at the Conference Center created this concert as a way to honor the mayors," Hickman said "The first year we did it was in 2009, when Bill Fanning was Mayor and then we have just done it every year since."
Hickman is enthusiastic about the evening.
In addition to music, some good food is planned with sausage sticks and barbecue from the Dairy Queen.
"It is just a great place to bring your lawn chair and come out and enjoy a free concert and some of the greatest food,” she said.
This year a local band will open at 7 p.m. with the headliner band, the Roland Bowling Band out of Oklahoma City beginning at about 8 p.m., Hickman said.
Roland Bowling Band is a group of military veterans who began playing together in 1998, said Vegas Bowling, bassist for the band.
In 2011, the Roland Bowling Band was Inducted into the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame in Rentiesville.
She credits the band's success to their love of music and of the fans of Blue music.
"It was all about the music, all about the music," Vegas Bowling said.
And while they clearly are connected musically, it just so happened, all three of them were military veterans as well.
Vegas served 20 years in the Air Force as well as her husband, the namesake of the band and Slammin' Dan, the drummer of the band, was in the Marine Corps, she said.
Roland Bowling Band plays all over the state and just this June, played for the Bricktown Barbecue and Blue Festival, Vegas Bowling said.
The band also enjoys the scene at Woodward, she said.
Woodward was great," Vegas Bowling said. "We had a wonderful time there and signed so many C.D.s"
