Road, bridge projects planned in area

Woodward, Okla. — Back in 2005, Oklahoma was ranked as having the worst roads and bridges in the nation by a private consumer watchdog organization called The Road Information Program.

Not something we want to be first in, said Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Mike Patterson at a late summer luncheon in Woodward where he was the keynote speaker.

That is why the Department of Transportation announced this fall, the continuation of the eight year plan and a whopping $6 billion that will be spent across the state. Some $58 million of those dollars are slated to be spent in and around the Woodward area, according to a recent Association of Oklahoma General Contractors (AOGC) announcement.

“Since the Eight-Year Construction Work Plan was adopted, we’ve seen a significant reduction in structurally deficient roads and bridges in this state,” said Bobby Stem, executive director of AOGC. “AOGC has a strong commitment to improving the infrastructure in Oklahoma for residents and travelers alike. This construction will help continue the development of our state, making Oklahoma more prosperous for generations to come.”

 According to Stem, In Woodward County alone, $58 million will be put into the repair and replacement of deficient roads and bridges on US Highways 183 and 270 and State Highways 15, 34 and 50.

 Near Woodward, among others, several projects are already planned and include:

· SH 149 over Beaver River in  FFY 2014 Bridge & Approaches, slated to cost $2,744,518

· SH-34 over Buffalo Creek in FFY 2016 Bridge & Approaches, slated to cost $3,990,318

· US-183 over Gyp Creek in FFY 2018 Bridge & Approaches $450,000 FFY 2016 Right Of Way $79,500 FFY 2016 Utilities, projected to cost $79,500

· US-183 from 4.6 miles north of Woodward County line north 4 miles FFY 2016 Grade, Draining, Bridge & Surface, projected to cost $7,872,872

· US-183 from Woodward County line north 4.6 miles FFY 2020 Widen & Resurface projected to cost $4,810,195

There are also plans to update bridges and approaches on State Highway 34, south of Woodward over Persimmon Creek as well as Indian Creek, according to the published ODOT Construction Work Plan for Division Six.

 According to ODOT spokesman, Kenna Carmon, the state is pleased to see the number of deficient bridges going down.

 “Our peak time was 2004, when we had 1,200 bridges that were deficient,” she said.

Through the eight year program, which is updated and new bridges and roads added every year, that number has dwindled to 556, she said.
