Woodward, Okla. — It doesn't appear that any students or teachers were in harm's way after a bb gun was reported at the Woodward Middle School campus Tuesday morning.

Woodward Police Det. Lt. Chuck Wheeler said, "At about 8 a.m. Tuesday morning a school resource officer at the middle school got a phone call from a school official stating they may have student with a gun in the science complex area."

Additional police officers responded to the school along with deputies from the Woodward County Sheriff's Office to assist in the search for the weapon.

"It was later found that the school crossing guard was in possession of the bb gun, which a male student had supposedly found in a bush at or near the school and turned over to the crossing guard," Wheeler said.

While Wheeler emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing, it is not believed that there was any intentional threat posed to the school.

Since the investigation was not yet complete, the detective said he could not provide any additional details when The News spoke with him around 10:30 a.m.

"Thats about all we have right now, everything is still being looked at. The school was searched, but there's still investigating taking place, so this is all very preliminary," Wheeler said.

Prior to the arrival of the police the school had been locked down in accordance with policy, the detective said.

He commended the school on its following of protocol.

"The school was locked down and they did what they were supposed to do," Wheeler said.
