Auditions Monday for ‘Robinson Crusoe’

Woodward, Okla. — Missoula Children's Theatre offers your child the chance to become a star in just one week.

The nationally touring children's theater will be coming to Woodward next week to put on a major musical production with help from 50 to 60 area children.

Auditions for a chance to participate in this year's production of "The Amazing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" will be held beginning at 4 p.m. Monday at the Josie Adams Cultural Center.  The auditions will be open to children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Charlie Burns, general manager of the Woodward Arts Theatre, which sponsors the Missoula program, said "any child in Northwest Oklahoma is more than welcome to audition."

Burns noted that no preparation is required for the audition but children must be on time, because with only one week to prepare there isn't time to accept any late auditions.

Immediately after cast selections are made on Monday, rehearsals will begin, Burns said.  The children will then rehearse nightly from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 11.

It's all in preparation for 2 public performances, which are set for 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.

There is a fee for tickets to the performances, the proceeds from which are used "to help pay for bringing Missoula here without having to charge the children to participate," Burns said.

He said the Woodward Arts Theatre board wants to give every child the opportunity to participate because "we believe it's important to offer artistic endeavors to people at a young age in order to encourage an interest in the arts throughout their lives."

In addition, Burns said participating in the Missoula production can be a great experience for children.

"They can gain vital life skills such as public speaking skills and social skills and teamwork," he said.

Missoula Children's Theatre also puts a twist on the plots of their plays to help teach children a lesson as they perform.  According to information from the touring company, their variation on the adventures of the shipwrecked Robinson Crusoe will help teach children about exploring the adventures of their imaginations.
