Art student holding paint party Saturday

Woodward, Okla. — Local artist Kiara Perez, a senior art education major at the University of Central Oklahoma is having a paint party Saturday.

The event will help Perez, a Sharon-Mutual graduate, make a teaching trip to Asia later this year. It will be held at the Conference Center in Woodward from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Perez made a similar trip in 2012 with the English Language Institute/China (ELIC), and she said that is how she fell in love with teaching. This trip will give her another opportunity to teach art overseas.

According to its website ELIC's goal is to send teaching professionals from English-speaking countries to interact  with English teachers in Asia in order to share teaching practices and methods.

After the first teaching experience, Perez said she felt such a strong calling to education that she transferred to UCO and switched majors.

"God has a plan for me to go overseas and not intentionally witness, but just for me to over there and build relationships and let my life reflect Him," Perez said. "I loved it so much that I'm going back with that organization, because they are so on track. They go there, they recruit teachers. They are serious about what they do. I am 100 percent with this organization."

Her last trip took her to China and Hong Kong and she said those are the likely destinations again.

"They try to place us where we have been before," she said.

Perez is responsible for paying her way overseas, which is why she is holding the paint party where she can put her study in art education to work as well as raise money

At the party, Perez will be doing a step-by-step classroom instruction in a relaxed atmosphere and her goal is for each person to take home a truly original piece of artwork.

"I don't want you to take home a piece of art that I made that you just copied," Perez said. "I want you to take something home that you have a piece of yourself in it, so I encourage a lot of creativity."

Cost of the paint party will include art supplies, snacks and drinks.

Due to limited space, reservations are necessary to attend the paint party.

You can get cost information and additional details from Perez by calling (580) 216-7199 or e-mail
