— April is National Financial Capability Month and the Oklahoma Jump$tart Coalition is observing it's 10th annual Jump$tart Your Money Week, April 20-26.

In conjunction with this the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA) is providing free Financial Fitness Kits statewide.

This is the 7th year OSCPA has partnered with libraries across Oklahoma for kit distribution. "Each year we receive positive feedback on our kits," said Amy Welch, OSCPA communications director. "Our members, the CPAs who help put these together, put a lot of time and thought into what to include, so JYM Week is an exciting time for the Oklahoma Society of CPAs."

The goal of JYM Week is to educate Oklahoman’s on important money matters. The recent 2014 Assets and Opportunity Scorecard by the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED) showed poor numbers for Oklahoma. In part, the state ranked 40th in income poverty rate, 42nd in unbanked households and 44th in consumers with subprime credit.

The Financial Fitness Kit contains a list of helpful websites and numbers. Everything from Emergency Disasters, Consumer Help, and Military Help to Financial Education Speakers/Material. The kit has many diverse financial subjects. There are chapters on retirement, teaching children about stocks, protecting seniors from fraud, estate planning, being your own boss, and so much more. "Home may be where the heart is, but it's also where a lot of money is spent." begins Chapter 4. It goes on to address the pros and cons of renting and buying, selling your home, hiring a contractor, etc. A sample budget is also provided.

The kits are distributed through public libraries, including Woodward Public Library, Tinker Federal Credit Union branches, and online at www.KnowWhatCounts.org.

"Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy is a coalition of diverse financial education stakeholders. These organizations work together to educate and prepare our youth for life long financial success." (website). For more information about Jump$tart and JYM Week go to www.OklahomaJump$tart.org.
