Government offices closed 2 days for Christmas

Woodward, Okla. — Local government offices will be closed for 2 days in honor of the upcoming Christmas holiday.

"Woodward County offices will be closed Christmas Eve, the 24th, and on Christmas Day, the 25th," County Clerk Charolett Waggoner said.

Likewise the City of Woodward will also be closing its doors on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to City Manager Alan Riffel.

The closures apply to all non-essential government offices.  A few "essential personnel" will still have to work the holiday at the Woodward County Sheriff's Office, the county jail, the Woodward Police Department and the Woodward Fire Department.

So for those looking to do business at any city or county offices, they'll need to visit the offices on Monday or wait until Thursday to accomplish their business.

Because of this, Riffel said that the city will be granting a temporary "grace period" to those citizens who are late on their utility payments to the city.

"We will not be cutting off any utilities until after Christmas," he said.  "Normally, some would be cut off on Monday, but we will be waiting until Thursday and Friday to do those cutoffs."

This grace period is not only a benefit for customers, allowing them "to get through the holiday" without having to worry about having their water shut off, he said.  But it also means a bit of cost savings to the city, because if a city employee had to be called out to restore water service on the holiday, "it would mean overtime for the call out."

In addition to the slight delay in utility cutoffs, the holiday closures will also mean a slight delay in trash collections for most city customers.

However, for those with regular Tuesday trash pickup, their trash will be picked up a day early on Monday, Dec. 23.

Then there will be no pickups on Tuesday, Dec. 24 or Wednesday, Dec. 25.  This means the Wednesday routes will be picked up on Thursday, Dec. 26; the regular Thursday routes on Friday, Dec. 27; and next Friday's routes on Monday, Dec. 30.
