Woodward, Okla. — Academic bowl teams from several western Oklahoma schools will be in Woodward on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

High Plains Technology Center is hosting the Oklahoma Association for Academic Competition (OAAC) Mid Level Area Championship, with 8 teams competing starting at 9 a.m.

Woodward's Middle School Gold team will host squads from Guymon, Elk City, Chisholm and Fairview with the top 2 teams advancing to the Challenge of Champions on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Redlands Community College in El Reno. Teams placing at El Reno have a chance to qualify for national competition.

The academic bowl teams will answer questions on core subjects such as pop culture, humanities, geography, math, science, and fine arts, said Woodward Middle School coach Abbie Wasson. Judging will be done by school representatives from Woodward and Guymon. Students from those two schools will be scorekeepers and moderators.

Woodward's Gold team, which won district and regional events with perfect records, has both 7th and 8th grade students and they must have grades of C or better and be in good standing in attendance in order to participate.

Wasson said this year's team is composed of a well-rounded students. For instance, she points out that normally she can expect a math answer to come from one or two students, but with this team, all can answer the math questions.

"The students are very pro-active," assistant coach Chelsea Roberts said. "If they do not know something, they will look it up later.”

Wasson has been with the academic bowl team for 6 years, first as assistant coach and now as head coach. Roberts has been the assistant coach for 3 years.
