A proposed change in the zoning of an area west of 1st and Downs sparked some debate Tuesday night during a hearing directly before the regularly scheduled Woodward City Commission meeting.
The property is currently zoned A-1 residential, but an active request by the owners and prospective owner/developer Chris Keeton to rezone the 2 acre tract for commercial use is in the works.
Prior to Monday's meeting, Keeton had made a purchasing offer to the owners on the 2-acre tract based on the condition that the property could be rezoned, he said.
Monday night, Keeton presented his plans for the property which include the development of upscale, temperature controlled storage units.
"It will be without a doubt comparable to what storage buildings in Edmond are like," Keeton said. "It will be block or stucco and it will be landscaped, it will not be a chain link fence and a metal building."
While there were no outright objections to Keeton's plans, property owners in the area were concerned that if the property becomes zoned commercially and then something happens to Keeton and he is unable to complete his planned upscale development, the property could be open to be exploited for its commercial zoning.
To settle the issue, all parties agreed to plat the property and present a plat to commissioners for approval. At that time city commissioners anticipated the could likely approve the plat for development based on those conditions.
In regular session, city commissioners tabled the item until Keeton could have the tract of land platted and copies of the plat made for their approval.
In other business, commissioners approved a resolution to begin the process of annexing a planned housing subdivision, which is at the southwest corner of 8th and Hanks Trail. The location will ultimately be a housing development featuring single family homes, said property owner, Gary Whitcomb.
Woodward Mayor Gary Goetzinger presented a retirement plaque, thanking officer Monty Martin for his 29 years of service to the Woodward Police Department.
Commissioners also took action to approve an added police officer to the two already sourced out to Woodward Schools as school resource officers. The addition of the officer will be handled according to the operations agreement between the city and the school district and will not represent an additional cost to the city, according to City Manager Alan Riffel.
