Chalk art contest Thursday

Bridget Bese

Crowded sidewalks. Music. Historic depictions. Fleets of artists.

All of that will be in downtown Woodward Thursday during the 7th annual Downtown Chalk Drawing.

The event, sponsored by the Woodward News, will involve approximately 150 high school art students from Woodward, Mooreland, Laverne, Turpin, Hardesty and Alva.

The youngsters, accompanied by sponsors, will be showing their artistic talents with the Main Street sidewalks as their canvas and chalk as their tools.

This year’s theme for the chalk drawing will be “Centennial” and the artists will be creating a mural of Oklahoma scenes on the sidewalks.

The artists may work as groups or as individuals. First, second and third place prizes will be given and the public may vote on its favorite for the people’s choice award.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. and last until approximately 3 p.m. The public is invited to watch the artists at work as they make the sidewalks festive for this Centennial year.

People will also be able to see the drawings on the sidewalks for several days.

The chalk art drawing contest started in 2001 as a patriotic memorial to the nation in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist bombings. Other themes have included Halloween, famous artist paintings, fall scenes and special drawings about hometowns.
