Laverne sets fall festival

LAVERNE--It’s a staple of the small town, the fall festival, with its roasting corn and bright pumpkins. Old-timers might say it keeps those who choose to live in western Oklahoma’s more harsh region, aware and celebrating those transition-celebrating the ranching lifestyle.
Each town up here has its peculiarities and touts its own spin on the old tradition of fall festival and that is no different for Laverne.
The Sixth Annual Laverne Fall Festival is due to kick off Saturday around noon on Main Street, said Laverne Chamber of Commerce Director, Lindy Cronister.
“We plan on roping off Main Street for this event,” Cronister said. “It’s mainly to have a safe, fun, family event to begin the fall season.”
The festival will begin with the registration at noon at the Laverne Chamber of Commerce for those who wish to participate in the Poker Run, a 110 mile event that will feature cash prizes, Cronister said.
At 6 p.m. a free will donation pork burger feed will begin with donations going to support more events in Laverne, Cronister said.
Children will have an opportunity to play in the inflatable gym and a moon walk as well as other carnival games, Cronister said.
“The tickets for the games and the Moonwalk are just $5,” she said. “They can jump, play slide and run till they are blue in the face.”
There will also be craft booths, and vendors as well as the Farmer’s Market vendors available during the festival.
“There will also be a cake walk and bake sale by some of the churches in Laverne,” Cronister said.
“We are also doing a prize wheel, $1 per chance with many prizes donated by local businesses.”
Cronister said winners at the prize wheel can win items such as free haircuts, food, and gift certificates from local Laverne businesses.
“I think what is really exciting is the Julie Dome, of Dome Insurance Agency will be offering the child identification cards that offer parents a chance to have a photo I.D. of their child on hand,” Cronister said.
