Literacy Council holding fundraiser

The Northwest Oklahoma Literacy Council is having a hotdog fundraiser Saturday in the Atwoods parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Fifty cents will get you a hotdog and a can of coke,” said Jan Nelson, Literacy Council coordinator.

Atwoods supplies the food and cooks the hotdogs.

“They do it all, it’s their donation to us,” Nelson said.  Members of the Literacy Council will serve the food.

The Literacy Council works to provide tutors and learning materials to people ages 16 and older who want to learn how to read, write, and speak the English language.

“There is a greater need than most people realize,” said Nelson.  “Some of our students have went on to attend college at Northwestern.”

If you would like to volunteer, Nelson said they could use the help. 

“We are always looking for good tutors Knowing a little Spanish is helpful, but not required,” she said.

“Increased donations would help us expand our program,” Nelson said.  “We could buy more books and teaching materials.”  

The Literacy Council is hoping to start offering classes in Laverne and Shattuck.  “Both places have a need for tutoring,” Nelson said.

“Donations from this area account for about 14% of our entire income.  We receive about $2,000 to $2,500 in donations and membership fees from the community every year,” she said.

National Literacy Day is Sept. 8.
