Local vacation sites still hopping

Rowynn Ricks

Despite the AAA’s prediction of a decrease in Fourth of July travel, area recreational spots are expecting a busy holiday weekend.

According to a AAA press release, out of the 40.45 million Americans expected to travel 50 miles or more this Independence Day, the agency estimates 493,500 will be Oklahomans.

However, for both the state of Oklahoma and the nation as a whole, the AAA said these numbers represent an approximately one-percent decrease in holiday travel from last year.

This decrease is evidence that “gas prices are continuing to take a toll on travel budgets,” according to Chuck Mai, AAA Oklahoma spokesman.

However, it seems to have a beneficial effect on local recreational spots like Boiling Springs State Park and Fort Supply Lake, which have enjoyed strong visitation this summer. In fact, both are booked for this weekend, except for tent camping which is available on a first-come-basis at both areas.

“Our visitation is very high,” said Eric Summars, a ranger at Fort Supply Lake, adding “we’ve been pretty much full every weekend.”

But while visitation to these areas is traditionally higher in the summer, Boiling Springs is actually “seeing an increase in cabin use,” according to BenNita Smith, administrative assistant at Boiling Springs.

Some of that increase can be “contribute(d) to more people staying closer to home,” she said, explaining that “we’re closer so they don’t have to spend as much for gas.”

Mike Caywood, park manager at Alabaster Caverns, also noted that visitation numbers were up for the caverns for the month of June.

But like Smith, Caywood said he believes the caverns may be seeing “more people from around here.”

However, Alabaster Caverns has still seen its share of out-of-staters as well, he said, noting that the park has taken Independence Day reservations for visitors from Texas and Louisiana.

Out-of-staters are still making their way to Fort Supply Lake as well, Summars said, noting that the lake has not only had visitors from nearby Liberal, Kan., but has also had campers from as far away as Arizona.
