Museum hosting local, area history course

Daniel Fedora

Those with an interest in local history may want to check out what’s happening at the museum.

The Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum on Williams Ave. will again serve as headquarters for a summer class on regional history. The week-long course, “Oklahoma Northwest,” will be held Monday, July 7 through Thursday, July 10. Northwest Oklahoma State University is offering the class in partnership with the museum and Historic Fort Supply.

Deena Fisher, dean of NWOSU’s Woodward campus, will teach the class, now in its eighth year. The class features a combination of lectures, demonstrations and guest speakers. It will focus primarily on Oklahoma history from the 14th century through statehood, with a concentration on Western Oklahoma. Topics will include prehistoric Oklahoma, Native Americans, the ranching industry, the military and early Woodward.

The class will go on field trips to the Washita National Battlefield, the Black Kettle Museum and Fort Supply. In addition, class members will have the opportunity to speak with a panel of survivors of the 1947 tornado.

Fisher said the course is open to the public as well as NWOSU students. “This is for people that love local history...people that have a passion for local history,” Fisher said. “It’s nice to know the history of your own backyard.”

The course lasts four days, eight hours a day, for a total of 32 hours. College students can receive three credit hours for the class, the equivalent of one semester-long college course.

Fisher said about 16 people have already registered for the class. Enrollment is limited to 25.

There is a $100 registration fee for the class for those not seeking college credit; those taking the course for credit must enroll through NWOSU and pay regular tuition rates in addition to the $100 fee. Interested parties can call NWOSU’s Woodward campus at 256-0049 or the museum at 256-6136.
