Lake rangers expect full campsites

Steve Painter

The Fourth of July holiday weekend is typically a popular one for lakes because they provide a place to escape the summer heat.

Even with Woodward’s big “Let Freedom Ring 2009” celebration set for this weekend, the lakes in the area have their campgrounds booked solid.

At least that is the case at Canton Lake. At Fort Supply Lake there are 16 sites with no electric hook-ups that are available on the east side said Don Underwood, lead ranger for the lake.

The sites are available on a first come, first served basis. Underwood said by tonight all the sites should be filled.

As of Tuesday night there were only five non-electric campgrounds open at Canton Lake, but those were expected to be filled by Wednesday night.

People at both lakes said that even though Woodward is having a large celebration it has not taken away from their Fourth of July business.

“It’s just a typical holiday weekend for us,” Underwood said.

Neither Canton Lake or Fort Supply Lake have special plans for the Fourth of July. Games will be held in the town of Canton on July 4. The town’s fireworks will also be shot off near the lake.

Every Fourth of July Underwood said the entrance gate at Fort Supply Lake is left open all night. That will be the case again this year so that people can come and go throughout the night as they please Underwood said.

Although camp sites will not be available this weekend that does not mean that fun cannot be enjoyed at the area lakes. There are still an assortment of water activities people can do to stay cool besides, the always popular picnicking and camping.
