History session planned in July

It’s time, once again, to enroll in the annual Oklahoma Northwest history session, a collaborative effort of Woodward’s Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum, Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Historic Fort Supply.

The class will run July 7 through July 10 and give those who enroll a unique experience learning about Northwest Oklahoma.

The fee to take the class is $100 and teachers may receive professional development points for attending the sessions. College students may receive three hours of college credit for the class but an additional fee is require to receive college hours.

During the week long event there will be lectures and field trips as well as demonstrations.

Students will travel to the Washita National Battlefield, Black Kettle Museum and Fort Supply during the week.

Topics for the week include physical setting and prehistory, Native Americans, military in Northwest Oklahoma, cattle trails, cowboys, ranching, homesteading and early Woodward.

The group will also hear from a panel of 1947 tornado survivors. Guest presenters include Dr. Alvin O. Turner, Dr. Lee Bement of the Oklahoma Archeological Survey and others.

Classes that are not on location will be held at the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum. Enrollment for the program is limited to 25.
