Oklahoma Trash-Off set to begin

The Woodward Rotary Club participates every year in the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s Annual Statewide Trash-Off event, but they do it all year long too, said Rotary Club President, Michael Meinders.

“We have a section of the highway west of Woodward that we go out on certain days and clean up and keep the trash off of all year long,” Meinders said.

This year, ODOT is pushing out its annual event beginning April 12 and any cleaning performed by groups during the months of April and May will qualify for the coveted top award - the engraved and dated Hub Cap Award that is proffered for certain acts of bravery such as, the most trash collected, the most unusual item and the most trash collected by one person.

Trash bags are provided and there is no fee for registering for the event.

According to ODOT officials, the most unusual item found last year was a front porch, a 1942 Oklahoma license and an antique spoon made in 1900, said Melody Johnson, spokesman for ODOT.

According to Johnson, many groups across the state combine the Trash-Off event with other fun events to encourage participation.
